El Jardin Secreto (The Secret Garden)

The second garden behind Casa Gallo is affectionately known as "El Jardin Secreto."  It is a bit of a surprise as you pass through the door on the second floor mirador and enter into a 2,300 square foot garden area.  As you step down into a 10 foot by 45 foot roofed patio, a green lawn and fruit trees greet you.  There are lime, orange, mango, aguacate (avocado), and guanabana trees.  The entire garden is surrounded by a ten foot terracotta colored concrete wall, itself covered by a profusion of colors of bougainvillea plants, which reach to the top of the wall and beyond.  Giant banana plants give a tropical coolness to the area that cannot be described;  it must be felt.  On the patio porch are a hammock, comfortable chairs and tables, providing a quiet and cool place to relax from the heat of the day, or to enjoy your first cup of coffee, or your glass of wine.  As the sun sets beyond the western wall the birds flock to the giant tamarindo tree that dominates the southwest corner of the garden.  You will enjoy this bit of heaven duirng your Granada vacation.

A tile above the doorway notes the entrance off the mirador (balcony) to El Jardin Secreto, the secret garden.  A guest commented that the rear garden was just like a secret garden, and she thus unwittingly named "The Secret Garden."  This 2300 square foot garden area was purchased after the house was purchased, and is part of a lot that belongs to another house.  We had it walled 10 foot high, and bougainvillea planted around the circumference.  5 truckloads of topsoil were hauled in before we planted trees and laid sod.  The huge tamarindo tree was already there, of course.  A patio roof and floor cover the entire width of the back garden, and we also have our standby water system 250 gallon tank here also.  This is a very quiet are of the house, and seating and a hammock provide tranquil reading spots.

To the right, out of sight, is an under-roof hammock where one may snooze, read a book, or just listen to the quiet - except late in the day when birds and noisy parrots flock to the Tamarindo tree.

The bougainvillea and banana plants, and mango tree to the right yield a refreshing coolness and tranquility to the Secret Garden.  This is one of many perks and advantages to Casa Gallo, 1/2 block west of the Ixchen Clinic or media cuadra oeste Ixchen, your Granada, Nicaragua vacation rental)   I believe I was lying in the hammock when I took this picture!

With luck, one of the bunches of bananas in the Secret Garden will be ripe when you are staying at Casa Gallo!
